Joburg Market’s ripening facility boosts quality of farmers’ produce

Written by Busisiwe Moagi

The Banana Ripening Facility at the Joburg Market is dedicated to enhancing the quality and value of fresh produce before it reaches the sales halls. Designed with farmers in mind, this facility offers a superior ripening process that guarantees optimal results for bananas, pawpaw, and avocados.

With 57 dedicated rooms, the facility can handle more than 1,500 pallets at a time. The ripening process is meticulously controlled, with bananas typically ripened at temperatures between 12-16°C, pawpaw at 32°C, and avocados at 24°C. The temperature is adjusted according to the condition of the fruit, ensuring that each pallet is ripened to perfection.

“The Joburg Market has truly set a high standard with the Banana Ripening Facility, making it an essential partner for any farmer looking to optimise their harvest,” says Joburg Market’s Complimentary Services Manager, Nombali Khuboni.

Despite the challenges posed by loadshedding, the Joburg Market has ensured continuous operation by connecting the facility to the ring feed from Moffat and Weppenaar substations and supporting it with a robust 7.81MVA generation farm. This setup includes multiple generators, guaranteeing that the ripening process remains uninterrupted regardless of external power disruptions.

The Joburg Market’s commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of the Banana Ripening Facility. The service is offered at an affordable rate of R17.20 per pallet per day, excluding VAT, making it an accessible option for farmers looking to maximise the value of their produce. The facility’s careful monitoring and temperature control ensure that fruits reach the Fruit Halls in peak condition, minimising waste and enhancing marketability.

Farmers across South Africa and Mozambique are strongly encouraged to bring their produce to the Joburg Market. This facility represents a significant investment in the success of their agricultural businesses, offering a service that is both efficient and cost-effective.
