Joburg Market is committed to nurturing and developing its workforce. Through a variety of training programmes, the organisation empowers employees to advance their skills and knowledge, ultimately driving career growth and organisational success.
As mandated by the City of Johannesburg, Joburg Market participates in the EPWP, providing work opportunities across multiple departments. This initiative aims to address unemployment and poverty by promoting skills development and creating pathways to employment.
Paul Sehloho, an EPWP participant, shared his experience: “I am currently working in the cleaning department, while others are gaining valuable practical exposure in areas such as maintenance, consignment, and security.”
Mohau Takadimane, Skills Development Facilitator (A), highlighted that the EPWP training programme encourages qualified participants to explore opportunities within Joburg Market’s main building. “As a result, some EPWPs have successfully transitioned into roles within Human Resources, Marketing, and Information Technology,” said Takadimane.
Study Assistance Programme
Joburg Market’s study assistance programme supports employees with over a year of service by offering access to a funded bursary scheme. This initiative enables individuals to pursue educational goals ranging from advanced certificates to postgraduate degrees.
Landiwe Buthelezi, a beneficiary of the programme, emphasised the positive impact it has had on her career: “Studying for a Supply Chain Management degree provided me with a solid foundation in logistics, procurement, and inventory management. Additionally, the Higher Certificate in Business Management broadened my skills in strategic planning, leadership, and organisational behaviour.”
Buthelezi highlighted the significance of continuous professional development, stating that these programmes equip employees with critical skills that directly contribute to organisational success.
Work Integrated Learning
Joburg Market’s WIL programme offers unemployed youth the opportunity to gain practical experience in their field of study through a voluntary programme proposed by a tertiary institution. This initiative provides participants with hands-on training, equipping them with the skills necessary for their careers and the workplace.
Nonkululeko Nkonyane, a WIL participant, reflected on the value of the programme: “I have gained a strong foundation in analytical chemistry techniques, becoming proficient in operating chromatographic instruments and learning quality control and assurance procedures. My laboratory skills have improved significantly, from sample preparation to chemical handling and instrumentation maintenance.”
By investing in its employees through these comprehensive development programmes, Joburg Market not only enhances individual careers but also builds a skilled and knowledgeable workforce that drives the organisation’s long-term success.
