Joburg Market recently hosted a dynamic Farmers and SMME Day under the theme “Growing Together”, led by MMC for Economic Development, Cllr Nomoya Mnisi.
The event, which attracted over 600 participants and 76 exhibitors who included emerging farmers, SMMEs, and industry leaders, tackled the pressing challenges faced by the local agricultural sector, creating a productive space for dialogue, networking, and solutions that empower small businesses and foster growth.
Key discussions focused on ways to strengthen the agricultural value chain, from market access to financing options. The Land Bank provided detailed insights into funding opportunities for farmers and agro-processors, helping them understand how tailored financing can accelerate their growth. The Joburg Property Company’s Asset Register Manager, Sindiso Hlazo, further addressed a significant hurdle — access to land for farming — and outlined steps farmers can take to navigate this challenge.
Addressing attendees, MMC Mnisi underscored the importance of the agricultural sector as a critical driver of economic development and job creation, while also pointing out persistent barriers: “While we see agriculture as a key economic driver, issues like market access, financing, and land availability continue to impede growth. This event offers valuable solutions and actionable knowledge that can help overcome these obstacles.”
The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, echoed this sentiment, stressing the industry’s broader impact: “Agriculture sustains not only our food systems but also the livelihoods of many in rural communities. Farmers are central to our economy, providing jobs and essential products that support Johannesburg’s urban and rural communities alike.”
The event offered exhibitors like Sibongile Cele, founder of Green Tree Market Agency, a unique opportunity to build vital connections. “I had the chance to showcase fresh produce and meet market agents, which is critical for small businesses aiming to expand their reach and visibility,” Cele shared.
In his closing remarks, Acting Joburg Market CEO Sello Makhubela praised the participants and leadership, particularly MMC Mnisi and Mayor Morero, for their support. “Your dedication is the foundation of the agricultural sector. We look forward to continuing this journey of ‘Growing Together,’ creating pathways for growth and empowerment in our communities,” he said.
The event solidified Joburg Market’s commitment to addressing key challenges in the agricultural sector and supporting the resilience and success of local farmers and SMMEs.
